| KATHARINE GATES is the founder/publisher of Gates of Heck press, through which she has collaborated with sex and fringe culture luminaries Annie Sprinkle and Joe Coleman, among others. She is the author of Deviant Desires: Incredibly Strange Sex and is the sole creator of this website. Ms. Gates graduated from Yale University in 1985 with a self-designed degree in Mythology, which combined Anthropology, Literature, Linguistics and Art History. |  |

Ms Gates attended Cooper Union School of Art, receiving a BFA degree in Sculpture in 1988. She had her first solo exhibition as an artist at PS1 Museum in Long Island City in 1989. From 1989-1990, Gates was a fellow of the Whitney Independent Study Program, a year-long intensive program in critical theory and art developed by the Whitney Museum of American Art. | |||||||||||

| In 1990, Gates moved to Richmond Virginia where she was an artist, art critic, curator and owner of a small gallery named Key. Located in the tobacco warehouse district of the city, Key. presented exhibitions by anyone from comix artist Charles Burns and Gary Panter to political activist/artist Hans Haacke. detailing the financial and political pressure brought by tobacco companies on the art world and the collusion of Senator Jesse Helms, then lobbying to destroy the National Endowment for the Arts, in this process. | ||||||||||||

| Gates founded Gates of Heck press in 1992, and over the past eight years she has published 15 fringe-culture books from twisted children's game-books to coffee-table art books to post-feminist pornography.
Deviant Desires is her first book under her own name, and was published by Juno Books in February 2000. Gates now lives New York City with her husband, a software developer. And no, they're not related to that guy from Microsoft. Katharine is currently pursuing a PhD in Sexology from The Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, CA. |
